Early Life and Education
Dave Bronconnier was born on October 7, 1962, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in northwest Glenbrook and attended Viscount Bennett High School. Bronconnier briefly attended the University of Calgary but dropped out to pursue employment opportunities.
Business Ventures
Bronconnier worked for City of Calgary Electric System and Alberta Government Telephones before founding his own construction company in 1983. In 1987, he partnered with a business associate to establish First General Services, a company specializing in fire restoration and insurance claims restoration. The company employs 15 individuals.
Political Career
Bronconnier entered politics in 1992 when he was elected to Calgary City Council. He served three terms as a councilor before deciding to run for mayor. In 1997, Bronconnier ran as the Liberal candidate for the Calgary West riding but lost to Reform Party incumbent Robert Anderson. In the 2001 election, he successfully challenged the incumbent to become Calgary's 35th mayor. Bronconnier was re-elected in 2004 with 80% of the vote from a turnout of 18%, the lowest voter turnout in the history of Western Canadian municipal elections. He was re-elected again in 2007.
Retirement from Politics
On February 23, 2010, Bronconnier announced that he would not seek re-election in the 2010 election. Bronconnier is married to Cindy, and they have four children.
