Early Life and Education
Dean Oliver Barrow was born on March 2, 1951, in Belize City, British Honduras (now Belize). He attended St. Michael's College before pursuing higher education at the University of the West Indies, Kingston, and the University of Miami School of Law.
Legal Career
Barrow began his legal practice in 1973 with the firm of his uncle, Dean Lindo. He became a full partner in the firm in 1977 and gained a reputation as a skilled legal professional, representing prominent figures in the banking, media, and other sectors.
Political Beginnings
Barrow's ambition led him to contemplate starting his own legal practice, but he ultimately decided to remain with his established firm. In 1983, he entered politics by running for the Belize City Council and secured an easy victory.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
In 1984, Barrow was elected to Parliament and appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Attorney General. He held these positions until 1989 when his party lost the parliamentary elections.
Return to Legal Practice
After leaving government, Barrow returned to his legal practice for five years. In 1993, the political landscape of Belize shifted, and Barrow was invited to rejoin the cabinet. He was reappointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and also assumed responsibility for national security.
"Minister of Everything"
Barrow's extensive responsibilities earned him the tongue-in-cheek nickname "Minister of Everything." His party lost the 1998 general elections, but he retained his seat in government and became the Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
Prime Ministership
On February 7, 2008, the UDP regained victory in the elections, and Barrow was sworn in as Prime Minister the following day. He was also appointed Minister of Finance in the formation of the new government.
Personal Life
Barrow has been married twice. He has three children from his first marriage to Lois Young and married his second wife, Kim Simplis, on February 7, 2009. They have one daughter together.
