Debbie Stabenow

Early Life and Education

Born in Gladwin, Michigan, Debbie Stabenow pursued higher education at Michigan State University. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1972 and her master's degree in social work in 1975.

Early Career in Social Services and Politics

Following her graduation, Stabenow worked in social services for Ingham County from 1975 to 1978. She then embarked on her political career, serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1979 to 1990 and the Michigan State Senate from 1991 to 1994.

Congressional Career

In 1996, Stabenow made history by defeating incumbent Republican Dick Chrysler in the race for Michigan's 8th Congressional District. This victory marked her entry into the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served until 2000.

Senatorial Tenure

In 2000, Stabenow was elected to the United States Senate, representing the state of Michigan. She has since been reelected three times, most recently in 2018.
