Early Life and Career

Born into a peasant family in the village of Pohrebky, Chernihiv Governorate (now Sumy Oblast, Ukraine), Demyan Korotchenko began his working life as a laborer on the railway and at a gunpowder factory in Shostka. After military service, he joined the ranks of the Bolsheviks in 1918.

Revolutionary Activity and Civil War

During the Russian Revolution, Korotchenko participated in the organization of Red partisan detachments in Ukraine, which fought against the Austro-German forces and the Ukrainian People's Republic. Subsequently, he served as a political commissar in the Red Army during the Civil War.

Party Leadership

In the early 1920s, Korotchenko held leadership positions in the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) in Shostka and Novgorod-Seversk. He also attended party worker courses in Kharkiv and served as secretary of the Chernihiv and Pryamiyiv Okrug committees. Additionally, he was a member of the CPU's Auditing Commission.

Moscow Years

In 1931, Korotchenko moved to Moscow, where he became head of the Bauman District Executive Committee of Workers' Deputies. Subsequently, he served as first secretary of the Bauman and Pervomayskiy District Committees of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

Return to Ukraine

Returning to Ukraine in 1937, Korotchenko was appointed acting first secretary of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Committee of the CPU. In February 1938, he was elected Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine).

Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars

As Chairman, Korotchenko focused on agricultural issues, such as livestock breeding, spring sowing preparations, and construction of agricultural facilities. He also addressed concerns regarding the autumn plow campaign, sugar beet harvesting, and the supply of meat to the state.

Later Career and Death

After the abolition of the Council of People's Commissars in 1947, Korotchenko served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR until 1954. He also held the position of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR from 1954 to 1969. Korotchenko passed away in 1969 and is buried in Bykivnia cemetery, Kyiv, Ukraine.
