Biography of Derek Sherinian

Derek Sherinian is an American keyboardist and former member of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater from 1994 to 1998. He was born on August 25, 1966 in California and started playing piano at the age of 5. After enrolling in Berklee College of Music, where he studied for 3 years, he met William Calhoun. In September 1987, Derek was hired by Buddy Miles, the drummer of Jimmy Hendrix's Gypsies, for a tour of rock and blues clubs across the country. In 1989, Derek embarked on a tour with Alice Cooper in support of his platinum album "Trash." He played 250 concerts with Alice from 1989 to 1998 and contributed to the recording of 2 albums.

After the second tour and album with Alice, Derek joined "Kiss" for a tour and recorded the album "Alive III" with them. In September 1994, Derek embarked on a tour with "Dream Theater" after the release of their album "Awake." After 6 months on tour, he was offered full membership in the band. After 3 albums and 2 world tours, Derek parted ways with "Dream Theater."

After leaving "Dream Theater," Derek released his solo album "Planet X." This was made possible through collaboration with Australian drummer Virgil Donati. The two, along with guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine, turned Derek's debut album into a musical project with the same name, "Planet X." Currently, Derek resides in Hollywood Hills, where he has his recording studio, Leopard Room. He records all his solo projects and "Planet X" projects there, as well as producing many up-and-coming bands.
