Dianne Feinstein: Early Life and Political Beginnings

Dianne Goldman was born in San Francisco and graduated from Stanford University. Her political career began in the 1960s when she served in local government. In 1970, she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where she became the first female president in 1978.

Mayor of San Francisco

Following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, Feinstein was appointed mayor in 1978. She completed Moscone's term and was elected to her first full term in 1979. During her tenure as mayor, she addressed the deteriorating condition of San Francisco's cable car system by securing federal funding for repairs. She also proposed a ban on handguns in the city, which sparked opposition from the White Panther Party.

Governor and Senate Election

In 1990, Feinstein ran for governor but lost to Republican Pete Wilson. She was fined in 1992 for campaign finance irregularities. When Wilson resigned to become governor, Feinstein was appointed to his Senate seat alongside Barbara Boxer.
