Early Life and Career
Rose Francine Rogombé was born on September 20, 1942, in Lambaréné, Gabon. Her father, Paul Marie Gondjout, was a prominent politician who served as the first Vice President of Gabon. From an early age, Rogombé was exposed to the inner workings of politics and developed a keen interest in public service.
Political Debut
In 1968, Rogombé entered politics when she was elected to the National Assembly as a representative of the Democratic and Republican Alliance (ADERE). ADERE was a political party founded by her father and was aligned with the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG). Rogombé quickly rose through the ranks of ADERE and became a key figure within the party.
Rise to Vice Presidency
In 1997, Rogombé was appointed Vice President of Gabon by President Omar Bongo Ondimba. As Vice President, she played a significant role in government affairs and was often seen as President Bongo's closest confidante. Rogombé's tenure as Vice President was marked by stability and continuity, and she remained a loyal supporter of the ruling PDG.
Interim Presidency
In May 2009, President Bongo was hospitalized and Rogombé assumed the role of interim President. She held this position for a month until President Bongo's return in June 2009. Rogombé's brief stint as President was characterized by a commitment to democratic values and a focus on maintaining stability during a period of political uncertainty.
Later Career and Legacy
After stepping down as interim President, Rogombé continued to serve as Vice President under President Bongo. She remained a prominent figure in Gabonese politics and was widely respected for her experience and dedication to public service. Rogombé died on February 10, 2015, at the age of 72. She is remembered as a trailblazing politician who made significant contributions to the development of democracy in Gabon.
