Jeanine Áñez Chávez: Bolivian Politician and Interim President

Jeanine Áñez Chávez is a Bolivian politician and lawyer who served as the interim president of Bolivia from 2019 to 2020. She was born in Trinidad, Bolivia, and began her political career as a media director at Totalvision.

Constituent Assembly (2006-2008)

In 2006, Áñez was elected to the Constituent Assembly, tasked with drafting a new constitution for Bolivia. She served on the assembly's Organization, State Structure, and Judiciary committees.

Senate (2010-2019)

In 2010, Áñez was elected to the Bolivian Senate as a representative of the Beni Department on behalf of the National Plan for Progress-National Convergence (PPB-CN) party. By 2019, she had risen to become the second vice president of the Senate, behind Franklin Valdivia Leyg. This position placed her sixth in the line of succession to the presidency.

Interim Presidency (2019-2020)

On November 10, 2019, President Evo Morales resigned amidst mass protests and a military memorandum. Vice President Álvaro García Linera and other high-ranking officials also resigned, leaving Áñez as the next in line to assume the presidency. On November 11, she was sworn in as interim president.

Áñez's first task was to establish a quorum in the legislature, which had been depleted by the resignations. She then called for new elections, which were held in October 2020. Luis Arce Catacora, Morales' former Minister of Economy and Finance, was elected president.
