Dina Boluarte: Peru's First Female President

Dina Boluarte, a Peruvian lawyer and politician, is the current President of Peru, assuming office on December 7, 2022, becoming the country's first female president.

Early Life and Education

Boluarte was born on May 31, 1962, in Chalhuanca, Apurímac. She graduated with a law degree from the University of San Martín de Porres and pursued postgraduate studies at the same institution.

Career in Public Service

Prior to her election as Vice President, Boluarte worked at the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status from 2007 until her election. She began her political career in 2018, unsuccessfully running for mayor of the Surquillo district on behalf of the left-wing Free Peru party.

In 2020, Boluarte was Free Peru's candidate for the snap parliamentary elections, but her party failed to secure enough votes to enter Congress. In the 2021 presidential election, Boluarte ran as Pedro Castillo's running mate for Vice President. Their ticket won the runoff election, and Boluarte was sworn in as Vice President on July 28, 2021.

On July 29, 2021, President Castillo appointed Boluarte as the Minister of Development and Social Inclusion in Guido Bellido's cabinet.

Presidency

On December 7, 2022, President Pedro Castillo dissolved Congress, prompting Congress to vote to remove him from office. Castillo was arrested after attempting to seek asylum at the Mexican embassy. Boluarte ascended to the presidency.

Boluarte's presidency has been marked by political instability, with ongoing protests resulting in approximately 50 deaths within a month. Demands from protestors include Boluarte's resignation and snap elections. On January 15, 2023, a state of emergency was declared.

Personal Life

Dina Boluarte resides in the Lima district of Surquillo. She is the president of the Apurímac Club in Lima.
