Early Life and Education
Thilo Sarrazin was born in Gera, Germany, into a family of a physician and the daughter of a Prussian landowner. His father was descended from French Huguenots from Burgundy, while his mother's ancestry included English and Italian roots. The surname "Sarrazin" is derived from the Muslim Saracens and is common in southern France. Sarrazin grew up in Recklinghausen, where he attended a local grammar school before being sent to an orphanage in Bavaria at the age of seven. Upon graduating from high school, he served in the military for four years and then studied economics at the University of Bonn, where he earned a doctorate.
Political Career
After completing his studies, Sarrazin worked for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He began his civil service career in the Federal Ministry of Finance and held various positions, including head of the railway division, before joining the German Trust Agency in 1990. In 2002, Sarrazin was appointed Senator for Finance in the Berlin Senate.
Controversies
Sarrazin's political career was marred by controversial statements regarding German immigration policy and Jewish genetics.
