Dixie Bibb Graves
Dixie Bibb Graves was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Alabama from August 20, 1937, to January 10, 1938. She was also the First Lady of Alabama from 1927 to 1931 and from 1935 to 1939.
Early Life and Marriage
Dixie Bibb was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and grew up with her four sisters. At the age of 18, she married David Bibb Graves, who went on to become the Governor of Alabama in 1927.
Political Activism
Graves identified as a "lifelong Democrat" and was an active member of the Alabama Equal Suffrage Association. She lobbied state legislatures in support of women's suffrage.
United States Senator
In August 1937, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed Alabama Senator Hugo Black to the Supreme Court. Following Black's departure from the Senate, Governor David Graves was authorized to appoint an interim senator until an election could be held. He chose his wife, Dixie, who became the first female U.S. Senator from Alabama.
As a senator, Graves focused on healthcare and education policy. During her five-month tenure, she served on the Committee on Claims, the Committee on Education and Labor, and the Committee on Mines and Mining.
World War II Service
During World War II, Graves served in the Women's Army Corps, the Red Cross, and the United Service Organizations. She commanded a unit in the Women's Army Corps.
Death and Legacy
Graves passed away on January 21, 1965, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1972.
