Born on October 19, 1977, Francis Suarez is an American politician and the current Mayor of Miami, Florida. He is a member of the Republican Party and became the first Cuban-American Mayor of Miami in November 2017, succeeding his father, Xavier Suarez.
Early Career and Mayoral Election
Suarez served on the Miami City Commission from 2009 to 2017. He is known for his advocacy for cryptocurrency, and has proposed developing a city-backed cryptocurrency for Miami. Under his leadership, Miami has attracted technology startups and investments as part of his efforts to transform it into a tech hub.
Suarez has also prioritized improving Miami's infrastructure and public transportation, as well as addressing climate change concerns.
Presidential Campaign 2024
In April 2021, reports emerged about Suarez's potential candidacy for the 2024 presidential nomination, alongside Nikki Haley. In September 2021, The Hill reported that Suarez was considering running for president independently.
On June 11, 2023, Suarez appeared on Fox News and announced visits to early primary states, stating: "When I get the message out to folks, they want to hear more." He urged viewers to tune in to a speech he was scheduled to give at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on June 15, calling it a "big speech" about "the future of our country," in the clearest indication yet of an impending presidential campaign announcement.
Suarez filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on June 14 and formally announced his candidacy the following day.
