Biography of Dmitry Kimelfeld
Dmitry Kimelfeld was born on July 1, 1950, in Kiev. He is a singer-songwriter and a member of the Union of Playwrights and the Union of Journalists (until 1990). He currently resides in Jerusalem, Israel.
Educational Background
Kimelfeld graduated from the Kiev State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in 1972. He also completed courses at the Moscow Courses for Playwrights at MEZU, as well as the Course for Pop Artists at the Khabarovsk Institute of Culture and the Course for Professional Guides at the Ministry of Tourism in Israel. He is a trained English and French language teacher, a first category vocal artist, and currently works as a professional tour guide.
Creative Career
Kimelfeld started writing songs on his own lyrics in 1968 and plays the 6-string guitar with 4 chords. Some of his songs were also written by Valery Sergeev, Vladimir Semenov, M. Shparber, A. Golubitsky, V. Novikov, and V. Vernov. He performed in duets with V. Sergeev (1968-1990), V. Semenov (1975-1990), and V. Novikov (1980-1990).
He participated in the Grushinsky Festival (1973, 1974), festivals in Minsk (1975), Kiev, and served on the jury of festivals in Kiev (1977), Kazan (1985), Vilnius (1987), and Nalchik (1987). In 1974, he wrote songs for the play "Evening Light" at the Kiev Russian Drama Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka. From 1979, he worked in theater and on the stage, becoming a member of the ensemble "Freylekhs" as an actor and scriptwriter. He formed the "OVIR" collective based on the youth composition of the ensemble and toured in Germany, France, Belgium, the United States, and Israel in the 1980s and 1990s. He is a member of the Kiev City Song Club and the Jerusalem Club "Shlyapa".
Personal Life and Influences
Kimelfeld's favorite authors are Mirzayan, Okudzhava, and Vizbor, and he admires the performer Nikitin. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked as a journalist on Ukrainian radio and television, writing songs for the pop music industry, including performances by Leonid Agutin and Sofia Rotaru. He also appeared in the television film "Tevye" and the movie "Blue Lightning" ("Countess"). In 1997, Kimelfeld published a book of poems and songs titled "In Those Times" in Jerusalem.
