Dmitri Stepanovich Zherebin
Lieutenant-ColonelBorn into a peasant family, Dmitri Stepanovich Zherebin joined the Red Army in 1923. After completing the Moscow Military Engineering School, he served in the Transcaucasus region. In 1931, he moved to Moscow and graduated from the V.V. Kuibyshev Military Engineering Academy in 1936.
Zherebin fought in the Spanish Civil War and the Battle of Lake Khasan, earning the rank of Colonel in 1938.
Brigadier-General
On the Eastern Front of World War II from 1942, Zherebin commanded the 96th Rifle Division from March to September 1942 and the 58th Rifle Division from January to April 1943. He was promoted to Brigadier-General on January 29, 1943.
Major-General
Over the course of the war, Zherebin was mentioned 24 times in the orders of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Joseph Stalin. For his exceptional leadership during the Battle of Berlin, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 29, 1945.
Lieutenant-General
Zherebin was promoted to Lieutenant-General on April 20, 1945, and graduated with honors from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1948. He held various high-ranking positions within the Soviet Ministry of Defense.
General-Colonel
In 1961, Zherebin attained the rank of General-Colonel and retired in 1968. He passed away in 1982 and is buried at the Kuntsevo Cemetery in Moscow, a site recognized as a cultural heritage object.
Legacy
Zherebin received numerous decorations, including three Orders of Lenin, five Orders of the Red Banner, as well as foreign honors. He remains a respected and celebrated Soviet military figure.
