Early Life and Career
Maksym Kovtun is a Ukrainian goalkeeper who began his football journey at Kyiv's "Smena" academy under the guidance of Mikhail Labuzov. Initially a field player, he transitioned to the goalkeeper position. Kovtun commenced his professional career with the capital club "Obolon," debuting on October 17, 1999, against "Naftovyk-Ukrnafta."
Move to Italy and Return to Ukraine
At 19, Kovtun secured a move to Italian Serie B side "Siena" but faced challenges in competing with established goalkeepers. Subsequently, he returned to Ukraine, featuring for "Vorskla-2 Poltava" and "Nafkom Brovary."
Time at Zorya, Tavriya, and Atyrau
In 2005, Kovtun joined "Zorya Luhansk," playing 62 matches. In 2007, he moved to "Tavriya Simferopol" but made only two appearances before departing on a free transfer to Kazakhstani club "Atyrau," departing in December 2008.
Later Career
Following stints with Ukrainian first division sides "Oleksandria" and "Zirka Kropyvnytskyi," Kovtun played for amateur club VPK-Agro Magdaliivka. In 2015, he rejoined the professional ranks with "Energiya Nova Kakhovka." Kovtun is known for his unique ability among Ukrainian goalkeepers to score penalties.
International Career
Kovtun represented Ukraine's student team at the 2001 Summer Universiade in Beijing, where they won silver medals. This achievement earned him the title of Master of Sports of International Class.
Personal Life and Education
Kovtun holds a higher education from the Republican Higher School of Physical Culture and Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky Pedagogical University. He is married and has a son named Ivan.
