Biography of Dominique Voynet
Dominique Voynet is a French political figure and senator from the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. She obtained her education as an anesthesiologist. During the late 1970s, while still a student, Voynet actively participated in environmental activism. She took part in protests against the construction of nuclear reactors in Fessenheim and Malville, as well as against deforestation in the Vosges on behalf of the "Belfort Association for Nature Protection".
Later, Voynet became a member of Amnesty International and the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT). She actively participated in the "Anti-Militarist Struggle Front" and the environmental organization "Friends of the Earth". Voynet was one of the organizers of the new French political party "Les Verts" (The Greens). In 1989, she was elected to the European Parliament.
From 1992 to 1994, she served as a member of the Franc-Comté Regional Council. National recognition came in 1995 when Dominique Voynet became a candidate in the presidential elections and received 3.32% of the votes in the first round. From 1997 to 2001, she served as Minister of the Environment and Regional Planning in the government of Lionel Jospin.
In 2004, Voynet was elected to the Senate of France representing the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. In 2007, she ran as a candidate in the presidential elections and received 1.57% of the votes (576,666), which was considered a defeat for The Greens.
