Dominique Zardi was a French actor, known to Russian audiences for his role as Fantômas' guard in the semi-comedic film trilogy by André Hunebelle: "Fantômas," "Fantômas Unleashed," and "Fantômas vs. Scotland Yard."

Early Life and Career

He started his career as a boxer and remained devoted to the sport throughout his life. Zardi began acting in 1958 and for the next three decades, he played episodic roles such as guards, police officers, bodyguards, and crooks. Often, his name was not even mentioned in the credits. Despite his minor roles, the actor left a lasting impression on audiences. His plain, ordinary face stood out in any film, no matter how insignificant the role.

Collaboration with Renowned Filmmakers

Dominique Zardi frequently worked with French cinema masters such as André Hunebelle, Jean-Pierre Mocky, and Pierre Granier-Deferre. Starting in 1963 as a guard in "Ophelia," he appeared in every film by director Claude Chabrol. Some of his notable performances include playing a police inspector in "This Man Must Die" (1963), a bishop in the comedy "Dr. Popaul" (1972), and Henry Retord in the crime comedy "Chicken with Vinegar" (1985). He also had a memorable role in "Madame Bovary" (1991) and Monsieur Chouteau in "The Color of Lies" (1999).
