Brazilian Football Legend: Dorval Yustrich
Early Career and "The Oyster"Dorval Yustrich (born 1914) was a renowned Brazilian goalkeeper and later coach. His nickname, "Yustrich," originated from his resemblance to Argentine goalkeeper Juan Elías Yustrich. Dorval began his playing career in 1935 with Flamengo, where he won four Rio de Janeiro State Championships. He later moved to Vasco da Gama and ended his playing days with América.
Coaching Career: Success and Controversy
After retiring from playing, Dorval embarked on a coaching career. He led Atlético Mineiro to two Minas Gerais State Championships before being dismissed in 1953 due to conflicts with players. In 1955, he moved to Portugal and coached Porto to a league and cup double. However, he returned to Brazil after clashes with star player Hernâni Silva.
Return to Brazil and International Experience
Dorval coached Vasco da Gama, Bangu, and Siderúrgica, winning a state championship with the latter. He also led Vila Nova and Atlético Mineiro, but was again involved in controversies, including a heated argument with Uruguayan player Cuciniega. Despite the scandals, Dorval inspired confidence in Dario, who became Atlético Mineiro's all-time top scorer. He also briefly managed the Brazilian national team in 1968, leading them to a 3-2 victory over Yugoslavia.
Controversy at Flamengo and Corinthians
In 1970, Dorval joined Flamengo. His debut resulted in a 6-1 victory over Independiente. After a promising first season, Flamengo struggled in the second year, leading to his dismissal. Dorval launched a campaign to become Brazil's national team coach but was unsuccessful due to criticism from incumbent coach João Saldanha. He later coached Corinthians and Coritiba.
Last Coaching Years and Retirement
Dorval's final coaching job was with Cruzeiro, where he was fired after a dispute over pool playing and his decision to substitute World Cup winner Brito. After leaving Cruzeiro, Dorval avoided the spotlight and passed away in 1990.
