Early Life and CareerErwin Koeman is a Dutch football coach and former player. He is the older brother of Ronald Koeman, a renowned footballer and coach. Erwin's professional career began at Groningen, the same club where his brother Ronald started. In 1979, he joined PSV, one of the top clubs in the Netherlands, where he played for three seasons before returning to Groningen.
Playing Career Highlights
In 1985, Koeman moved to Belgian club Mechelen, where he achieved significant success. He helped the club win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1988 and the Belgian championship in 1989. In 1990, he returned to PSV, winning two Dutch league titles in 1991 and 1992. Koeman played his final season with Groningen in 1998, after which he retired and transitioned into coaching.
International Career
Koeman made his international debut for the Netherlands in 1983. He played 31 matches for the Oranje, scoring two goals. He was part of the Dutch team that won the European Championship in 1988 alongside his brother Ronald. He also represented the Netherlands at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Koeman became a coach with PSV's youth team. In 2001, he became assistant coach to PSV manager Erik Gerets. He went on to manage Dutch clubs such as Willem II and Feyenoord. In 2008, he was appointed manager of the Hungarian national team. His first match in charge resulted in a 3-2 victory over reigning European champions Greece.
