Biography of Dorothy Dow

Dorothy Dow was an American classical soprano, whose active international career spanned from the 1940s to the 1960s. She performed in both opera productions and concerts, and her vocal range was classified as dramatic soprano. Dow possessed a rich range which she used with great expressiveness. After retiring from the stage in 1968, she began her second career in academic circles.

Dorothy Dow was born on October 8, 1920, in Houston, Texas. She studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in vocal performance in 1942. Dow quickly became one of the leading concert sopranos in the United States, performing with orchestras across the country and receiving high praise for her solo concerts.

In 1946, Dow made her professional debut on the opera stage in Buffalo, New York, portraying Santuzza in Pietro Mascagni's "Cavalleria rusticana". Her first major success came in 1947 when she performed the role of Brünnhilde in a concert performance of Richard Wagner's "Götterdämmerung" with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy.

Dow's opera career was primarily focused in Europe rather than the United States. From 1948 to 1950, she sang at the Zurich Opera. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Dorothy was a frequent guest at Milan's La Scala, where she performed roles such as Chrysothemis in Richard Strauss' "Elektra," Elisabeth in Wagner's "Tannhäuser," the lead role in Amilcare Ponchielli's "La Gioconda," Judith in Béla Bartók's "Bluebeard's Castle," Marie in Alban Berg's "Wozzeck," Cressida in William Walton's "Troilus and Cressida," and many others.

In 1952, Dow made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera as Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi's "Macbeth". The following year, she returned to Glyndebourne to sing the leading role in Richard Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos". In 1954, Dorothy performed Irmengard in Gaspare Spontini's "Agnes von Hohenstaufen" at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence. A year later, she portrayed Renata in Sergei Prokofiev's "The Fiery Angel" at La Fenice, receiving high praise from critics. Although Dow rarely performed on the opera stage in the United States, the few performances she gave in her homeland were highly regarded.

In May 1947, Dorothy played the role of Susan B. Anthony in the world premiere of Virgil Thomson's opera "The Mother of Us All" at Columbia University. In 1951, she performed as the Woman in the American premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's "Erwartung" in Washington, D.C.

In 1968, Dow retired from performing, obtaining academic degrees in history and humanities from the University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and New York University. She then taught history at Rutgers University for many years. Dorothy Dow passed away on February 26, 2005, in Galveston, Texas, at the age of 84.
