Early Life and Education
Dragan Đilas was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). He attended high school in Belgrade and later earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Political Activism and Journalism
In 1989, Đilas co-founded Radio B92, an independent radio station that played a significant role in the overthrow of Slobodan Milošević. He became one of the station's program editors and was a prominent political opponent of Milošević.
In the early 1990s, Đilas was a leader of student protests in Belgrade. He was involved in pro-democracy and anti-war movements during the Yugoslav Wars.
Government and Political Career
In 2004, Đilas joined the Democratic Party of Serbia (DS). He was appointed Head of the People's Chancellery in 2004 and later served as a Minister without Portfolio from January 2007.
On August 19, 2008, Đilas was elected Mayor of Belgrade by the Belgrade Assembly. He served in this position until November 2013.
Personal Life
Đilas is divorced and has two daughters, Sofija and Jovana. He is not related to the famous Yugoslav politician and dissident Milovan Đilas.
