Nurtai Abykayev - A Statesman and Security Expert
Early Life and Military ServiceNurtai Abykayev was born into a family with a strong sense of duty and service. His father, Muhametkarim, was a rural teacher and a decorated veteran of the Finnish and Great Patriotic Wars. He rose through the ranks, from a private soldier to a senior lieutenant and political instructor for the legendary "Katyusha" rocket launcher unit. After the war, he served as an instructor, deputy chairman of the district executive committee, and chairman of a collective farm.
Career in the KGB and KNB
Abykayev's career in national security began in the Soviet era. He held various positions within the KGB of the Kazakh SSR, including deputy chief of the Aktyubinsk regional department. After the independence of Kazakhstan, he became head of the KNB department for the Zhambyl region and first deputy chairman of the KNB.
Chairman of the KNB
In 1995, Abykayev was appointed Chairman of the Committee of National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KNB). He served in this role until 1997, during a critical period in Kazakhstan's national security.
International Roles
After his tenure as Chairman of the KNB, Abykayev held several high-level international positions. He served as Deputy Director of the Barlau intelligence service, Kazakhstan's official representative to Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan's official representative to the Russian Federation.
Leadership in Regional Security
Since 2010, Abykayev has served as the head of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). In this role, he has played a crucial role in coordinating regional counterterrorism efforts and promoting cooperation among member states.
