Early Life and Education
Diego Manuel Antero Alavacón Cárdenas was born on May 9, 1961, in Arequipa, Peru, to Diego Alavacón Carpio and Nancy Tejeda Escobedo. He studied accounting at the National University of Saint Augustine, earning a bachelor's degree and later a professional degree. However, it was later discovered that his diploma was fraudulent.
Public Service
On June 9, 2016, Alavacón was appointed Comptroller General of the Republic, but was removed from office on July 4, 2017. On October 9, 2019, he was introduced as a special advisor to the governor in the Arequipa Regional Government, led by Elmer Cáceres Llica. He resigned from this position on November 6, denouncing acts of corruption within the regional authority.
Political Career
In the 2020 parliamentary elections, Alavacón was elected to Congress as a representative of the Union for Peru party from Arequipa, taking office on March 16 of that year. On April 21, he was elected chairman of the Oversight Committee on Congress Activities within the framework of the state of emergency decreed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru. Alavacón was an advocate for the removal of President Martín Vizcarra from office. In April 2021, he was suspended from his duties as a congressman of the Republic during a criminal trial against him for alleged corruption during his time as Comptroller General of the Republic.
Death
On May 14, 2024, at the age of 63, Alavacón died in a bus accident in Ayacucho. The crash also killed twelve other people and injured fourteen.
