Early Life and ConversionEdmund Jennings was born into a Protestant family in England in 1567. At the age of 16, he converted to Catholicism, defying the laws of the time.
Priestly Education and Return to England
In 1583, Jennings left for Reims, France to attend the English College. After graduating in 1590, he was ordained a priest. Despite the danger posed by England's anti-Catholic laws, he returned home to provide clandestine pastoral care.
Martyrdom
On November 7, 1591, Jennings was arrested alongside fellow priest Polydore Plasden during a Holy Mass. They were sentenced to death and executed by quartering on December 10, 1591. Catholic martyr Swithun Wells was also executed by hanging.
Influence on His Brother
Edmund Jennings' unwavering faith left a profound impression on his younger brother, John. John converted to Catholicism and later penned a biography of his brother, published in 1614.
Canonization
On October 25, 1970, Edmund Jennings was canonized alongside 40 other English and Welsh martyrs by Pope Paul VI. His feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on October 25.
