Edward Formanek is an American chess master and mathematician who made significant contributions to both fields.

Chess Career

Formanek achieved the title of International Master in 1977 and was a multiple-time Pennsylvania State Chess Champion. He also represented the United States at the 15th World Student Team Chess Championship in 1968.

Mathematical Achievements

Formanek earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Rice University in 1970 under the supervision of Stephen M. Gersten. He joined the faculty of Pennsylvania State University in 1978 and remained there until 2009.

In 1972, Formanek independently discovered the central polynomials, which have significant applications in the theory of polynomial identity rings. He became a member of the American Mathematical Society and made notable contributions to the field of algebra.
