Biography of Efim Tkach

Efim Tkach was a Moldovan Soviet musicologist, music critic, and public figure. He was born in 1926 in the Bessarabian village of Sekuryany (now Sokiryany, Chernivtsi Oblast, Ukraine) to a wealthy Jewish family. From an early age, he lived in Beltsy and received his education there. During the Great Patriotic War, Tkach and his family were forced to live in the Kryzhopol ghetto in Transnistria. After the liberation in 1944, the family returned to Beltsy.

Tkach attended the Beltsy Pedagogical Institute and later graduated from the orchestral faculty of the Kishinev Conservatory, specializing in flute. He began teaching at the Kishinev Secondary Special Music School named after E. Koki in 1949 while still a student. Tkach worked as a music editor for the publishing houses "Kartya moldovenyaske," "Literatura artistike," and "Moldavian Soviet Encyclopedia." He also served as the head of the music department at the Moldavian State Philharmonic and taught at the G. Muzicescu Kishinev Institute of Arts.

Tkach was a member of the Union of Composers of Moldova. In his later years, he hosted a Yiddish radio program on music topics called "Indzer leyb." In 1997, Tkach, along with literary critic Efim Levit and poet Anatol Guzel, founded the Anti-Fascist Democratic Alliance in Moldova, and he served as its chairman until his death.

As a prolific writer, Tkach authored numerous articles on Moldovan musical culture, the works of contemporary Moldovan composers, and general music theory in Russian and Moldovan languages. He co-authored the monographic books "Manual on Elementary Music Theory" (with Z.L. Stolyar, 1957, 1961, and 1964 in Russian and Moldovan), "Guide to D. Gherfeldt's Opera 'Grozovan'" (with Z.L. Stolyar, 1960), "Music Guide" (Volume 1 - 1962, Volume 2 - 1966, in Moldovan), "Brief Music Dictionary" (1972, in Moldovan), "Ciprian Porumbescu. Selected Works" (1975, in Moldovan), "Timofey Gurtovoy" (in Moldovan, 1975), "Music of Soviet Moldova. 1945–1970. Notography" (1976, in Moldovan and Russian), "Premieres. Portraits" (a collection of articles in Moldovan, 1977), "Evgeny Doga" (in Moldovan, 1980), "Dmitry Cantemir. Musical Compositions" (in Moldovan, 1980), "Introduction to Romanian Music" (about the history of Romanian music, 1994), and "Anti-Judaism or the World in the Cave" (two editions in Russian and Romanian about the Holocaust in Moldova, 1998/1999).

Tkach also translated books into Moldovan, including M. Goldenstein's "Music in the Life of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin" (1964) and F. Orekhovskaya's "Five Portraits" (1973). Together with philologist Efim Levit and poet Anatol Guzel, he compiled and published four volumes of documents related to the events of the Holocaust in Moldova in the bilingual Russian-Romanian journal "Nu vom uita! - We Will Not Forget!"
