Early Life and Career
Olena Zhyrko was born in Ukraine and grew up playing basketball. Standing 180 cm tall, she excelled as a forward and graduated from the Kyiv State University of Physical Culture.
National Career
Zhyrko's national career flourished with the Soviet Union. She played for "Stal" Dnipropetrovsk from 1984 to 1989, and for "Dynamo" Kyiv from 1989 to 1993. In 1992, she reached the pinnacle of her career by becoming an Olympic champion with the Unified Team.
International Success
