Elenio Herrera was born in Argentina to a family from Andalusia who had moved to search for work. When he was four years old, the family relocated to French Morocco. It was there that Herrera began playing for the team "Racing" in Casablanca. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris and played for clubs such as "France Paris," "Stade Français," "Charleville," "Roubaix," and "Red Star." He won the French Cup in 1942 as a member of Red Star.
After retiring as a player, Herrera became a coach and gained fame as the world's most famous coach in the 1950s and 1960s. He won the Spanish championship and the Fairs Cup twice during his three-year tenure at Barcelona.
