Elisabetta Trenta: Italian Scientist, Security Expert, and Politician
Early Life and EducationElisabetta Trenta was born in Italy and embarked on an academic journey that culminated in several degrees. In 1994, she graduated with a degree in Political Science from the prestigious Sapienza University of Rome. Two years later, she obtained a Master's degree in International Development. Her pursuit of knowledge continued in 2008 when she earned a degree in Intelligence and Security from Link Campus University.
Humanitarian and International Work
Driven by her passion for helping others, Trenta dedicated her early career to humanitarian projects with SudgestAid. Her work took her to war-torn countries, where she engaged in various initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability. She also served as a political advisor to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iraq (2005-2006) and to the Lebanese Ministry of Defense with the UNIFIL mission (2009).
Research and Academia
Upon returning to Italy, Trenta joined the faculty of Link Campus University in Rome. She also conducted research at the Centro Militare di Studi Strategici (Military Center for Strategic Studies). Her expertise in security and defense issues earned her recognition in academic circles.
Entry into Politics
In 2018, following parliamentary elections, Elisabetta Trenta was tapped by Luigi Di Maio, the leader of the Five Star Movement (M5S), as a potential candidate for Minister of Defense in his future cabinet. This appointment raised concerns due to alleged conflicts of interest stemming from SudgestAid's collaboration with Link Campus University, which had been under investigation for corruption.
Minister of Defense
On June 1, 2018, Trenta officially took office as Minister of Defense in the coalition government formed by the M5S and the League. Her tenure was marked by controversy, including the high-profile cases of the Sea-Watch and Mediterranea NGOs, which rescued migrants in the Mediterranean Sea in defiance of Italian authorities.
Resignation and Post-Ministerial Career
In September 2019, Trenta resigned from her post as Minister of Defense. Her departure coincided with the formation of Giuseppe Conte's second government, which excluded her from cabinet appointments.
Investigation and Departure from M5S
In November 2019, military prosecutors launched an investigation into Trenta's use of a luxurious government apartment. Public outcry forced her husband to relinquish the property. In June 2021, she announced her decision to leave the M5S, citing its departure from its founding principles of transparency and grassroots democracy.
