Imperial Heir
Lucius Aelius Verus was the adopted son and heir of Emperor Hadrian from 136 to 137 CE. Hadrian's biographer wrote that Verus was chosen due to his "beauty alone."
Adoption
To popular disapproval, Hadrian adopted Verus and granted him the name Caesar Aelius Verus (officially Lucius Aelius Caesar). He celebrated with public games and financial gifts. Verus was appointed governor of Pannonia, consul in 137, and granted a second consulship.
Health Concerns
Hadrian considered Verus to be in poor health and remarked that they had "leaned upon a feeble wall and squandered 400 million sesterces" on the adoption festivities. Verus's weakness was so severe that he was unable to deliver a speech of thanks to the Senate for his adoption.
Death
In January 138 CE, Verus succumbed to an overdose of medicine. Hadrian forbade public mourning due to an upcoming festival.
Biography
Verus's biographer described him as a man of "carefree habits and liberal education." His reputation for beauty reportedly outshone his character. Despite his brief tenure at court, Verus was considered to have maintained the dignity of his lineage. He possessed physical charm, oratory skills, and literary talent. He also showed competence in public affairs.
