Early Life and Family
Elizabeth Cheney was born on July 28, 1966, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Dick and Lynne Cheney. Her father was a long-serving Republican politician, including serving as the 46th Vice President of the United States. Elizabeth has a younger sister, Mary Cheney, who is an LGBT activist.
Education
Cheney graduated from Colorado College. She then went on to obtain her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School and her doctorate in ancient Near Eastern studies from the Oriental Institute.
Career before Politics
Before attending law school, Cheney worked for five years in the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Following this, she worked at Armitage Associates LLP, a consulting firm founded by Richard Armitage.
Legal Career
After graduating from law school, Cheney practiced law in the private sector. She also worked as an international lawyer and consultant for the International Finance Corporation.
Political Career
Election to CongressIn 2016, Cheney was elected to represent Wyoming's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. She won with 62% of the vote. This seat had previously been held by her father from 1979 to 1989.
Congressional Tenure
Cheney was reelected to the House in 2018. She is a member of the Republican Party. In 2021, she was one of only ten Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump.
Personal Life
Elizabeth Cheney is married to Philip Perry, an attorney. They have five children: Kate (born 1994), Elizabeth (born 1997), Grace (born 2000), Philip Richard (born July 2004), and Richard (born July 11, 2006).
