Early Life and Education

Elizabeth Truss was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, and raised in a politically active household. Her parents held left-wing views and involved her in anti-nuclear disarmament campaigns. Truss attended Roundhay School, a state comprehensive school in Leeds, before pursuing Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Merton College, Oxford, where she led the Liberal Democrat society.

Career in Finance and Think Tanks

After graduating from Oxford, Truss worked in finance for Shell and Cable & Wireless. In 2008, she became a deputy director at the Reform think tank, where she developed proposals for greater private sector involvement in public services.

Entry into Politics

In 1996, Truss joined the Conservative Party and served as Chairman of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association. She unsuccessfully stood for election to the House of Commons in 2001 and 2005. In 2010, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk.

Ministerial Appointments

In 2012, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Truss as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education. In 2014, she was promoted to Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She retained this position in Cameron's second cabinet after the 2015 general election. In 2016, she became Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor in Theresa May's first cabinet.

Separation of Lord Chancellor and Justice Minister Roles

In 2017, the cabinet agreed to separate the roles of Lord Chancellor and Justice Minister, following a series of errors. Truss was appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in May's second cabinet.

Minister for Foreign Trade and International Trade

In 2019, Truss was appointed as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade in Boris Johnson's cabinet. She also assumed the role of Minister for Women and Equalities following the resignation of Amber Rudd.

Personal Life

Truss married Hugh O'Leary, a chartered accountant, in 2000. They have two daughters. Her political journey has been marked by a significant shift from her left-leaning views during her childhood to her current position as a Conservative Party member.
