Early Life and Education
Elşad Gurbanov was born on January 2, 1951, in the village of Uруд in the Sisian district of the Armenian SSR. He began his education in 1958 in his hometown, graduating from high school in 1968 in the Shahbukh district of the Nakhchivan ASSR.
In 1973, Gurbanov graduated with honors from Medical College No. 8 in Baku. From 1972 to 1979, he worked as an assistant sanitary doctor at the sanitary and epidemiological station in Baku.
In 1979, Gurbanov graduated from the Faculty of Biology at Azerbaijan State University. He then pursued a PhD in botany at the Institute of Botany of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (NANA), which he completed in 1982.
Academic Career
From 1982 to 1992, Gurbanov worked as a lecturer and later as an associate professor in the Department of Botany at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University. In 2004, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences on the topic of "Flora and Vegetation of the Atropatan Province (on the Territory of Azerbaijan)."
Since 1992, Gurbanov has been the Head of the Department of Botany at Baku State University. He teaches courses in plant systematics, plant conservation, geobotany, plant ecology, and local flora.
Research Contributions
Gurbanov's research interests include plant systematics, geobotany, and plant ecology. He has proven the presence of desert and pseudo-maquis vegetation types on the territory of Azerbaijan. Gurbanov has authored over 150 published articles, 2 monographs, and 5 books. Under his guidance, 2 candidates of science have successfully defended their dissertations.
