Early Life and Career
Birnir Birgisson(born May 20, 1983) is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Udinese and the Iceland national team.
Birgisson began his career at hometown club Hafnarfjörður. He moved to English club Tottenham Hotspur in 2005 but never progressed beyond the reserve team.
Club Career
Norway and ItalyOn July 10, 2007, Tottenham sold Birgisson to Norwegian club Lyn Oslo. However, his stay in Norway was brief, as he joined Italian club Reggina just two weeks later on July 28.
Birgisson spent two seasons with Reggina in Serie A, making regular appearances but not establishing himself as a permanent fixture in the starting lineup.
Loan to Barnsley
In the 2009/10 season, Birgisson went on loan to English Championship club Barnsley.
Udinese
Following his loan spell at Barnsley, Birgisson returned to Reggina and eventually transferred to Serie A club Udinese in the summer of 2010.
International Career
Birgisson has represented Iceland at various youth levels. He made his senior international debut in 2007 and has since earned over 50 caps for his country.
Distinctive Features
Birgisson is known for his distinctive tattoo of Fidel Castro on his leg.
