Biography of Emile Lahoud

Emile Jamil Lahoud was born on January 10, 1936, in the mountainous region of Lebanon. He comes from a noble family and has had a distinguished career in the military and politics.

Early Life and Education

Lahoud completed his education at the prestigious British Naval College in 1959. After graduating, he served at the Lebanese Navy base in Beirut before joining the Ministry of Defense.

Military Career

In 1989, Lahoud was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Lebanese Armed Forces. He was known for his integrity, intelligence, and composure. Lahoud preferred to stay away from the public eye, avoiding journalists, and only recognized two holidays - Independence Day and Army Day.

Presidential Election

In 1998, Lahoud was elected as the President of Lebanon by the Parliament, becoming the 11th head of state in the country's more than half-century history of independence. He officially assumed office on November 23, succeeding his predecessor Elias Hrawi.

Personal Life and Legacy

Lahoud is married to Andre Amadian, an Armenian, and they have three children together. He has a passion for sports and is admired by more than 50 percent of the population. So much so that the Parliament even amended the constitution to allow high-ranking officials to run for elections earlier than the previously required two years after their resignation. This amendment cleared the way for Lahoud to occupy the presidential palace in the suburb of Beirut - Baabda.
