Émile Acollas: French Jurist and Legislator
Émile Acollas (1826-1891) was a prominent French jurist and lawmaker.Early Life and Education
Acollas pursued his legal studies at the University of Paris. His academic excellence led to him being appointed as a lecturer at the University of Bern from 1850 to 1860.
Political Activism
Acollas's political activism emerged at the Geneva Congress in 1867. His outspoken support for radical ideas resulted in a one-year prison sentence. Undeterred, he became a leading figure in the League of Peace and Liberty.
Paris Commune and Academic Career
During the Paris Commune of 1871, Acollas was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law. However, he declined this position. In 1878, he established the academic journal "La Science politique."
Legacy and Honors
Acollas's contributions to jurisprudence and political thought have been widely recognized. A street in Paris, Avenue Émile-Acollas, is named in his honor, situated near the Champ de Mars.
