The 1900 Paris Olympicsmarked Deschamps' Olympic debut. He joined the fourth French team in the coxless fours event. Despite their failure to qualify for the final through the main competition, Deschamps and his teammates, along with two other teams, organized an unofficial final race. In this remarkable display of sportsmanship and determination, Deschamps steered his crew to victory, earning the gold medal. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) subsequently recognized this race as official, making Deschamps an Olympic champion.
