Tamara Csipes: Hungarian Kayaking Legend
Early Life and CareerTamara Csipes was born in Budapest, Hungary, on August 24, 1989. She initially pursued swimming before transitioning to kayaking at the age of 11. Csipes honed her skills at the Budapest Honved sports club under the guidance of her father, Ferenc Csipes, an Olympic and multiple-time World Champion.
Junior Success
Csipes emerged as a promising paddler in 2004, winning the European Junior Championships. She continued her winning streak at the Junior World Championships in 2005 and 2006, claiming two gold medals each year.
International Breakthrough
In 2009, Csipes joined the Hungarian national team and made her mark at the European Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. She secured two silver medals in the K-2 1000m and K-4 500m events. The following year, at the European Championships in Corvera, Spain, she won gold in the K-2 1000m, silver in the K-1 5000m, and another silver in the K-4 500m. At the World Championships in Poznan, Poland, she triumphed in both the K-2 1000m and K-4 500m races.
European and World Dominance
Csipes's success continued in 2011. She won gold in the K-2 500m and 1000m at the European Championships in Belgrade, followed by gold in the K-1 1000m and 5000m at the home World Championships. Her outstanding achievements earned her the title of Hungary's Sportswoman of the Year.
Olympic Setback and Return
Despite her impressive results, Csipes failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Disappointed, she briefly considered switching to the Australian team. However, the Hungarian Rowing Federation prevented the move, and Csipes announced her return to the Hungarian national team in 2014.
Continued Success and Controversies
At the 2014 European Championships, Csipes won gold in the K-1 1000m and K-2 500m. At the World Championships in Moscow, she claimed silver in the K-1 1000m and gold in the K-2 500m, becoming a five-time World Champion. However, in 2015, she failed a drug test and was suspended for four months.
Olympic Glory
After serving her suspension, Csipes regained her spot on the Hungarian team. In 2016, she represented her country at the Rio Olympics in the K-4 500m event alongside Gabriella Szabo, Danuta Kozak, and Krisztina Fazekas. They dominated the race from start to finish, winning the gold medal and making history as the first Hungarian team to win an Olympic gold in women's kayaking.
