Eric Adams: A Rise from Brooklyn
Eric Adams is the 110th Mayor of New York City, serving since January 2022. A lifelong Democrat, he has a long history of public service.
From the NYPD to the State Senate
Before his mayoral career, Adams worked for 22 years in the New York Police Department, rising to the rank of captain. He then served as a New York State Senator from 2007 to 2013.
The Borough Presidency
In 2014, Adams became the 18th President of the Brooklyn borough, a position he held until 2021. As borough president, he advocated for affordable housing, education, and public safety.
The 2021 Mayoral Election
On November 4, 2021, Adams emerged victorious from a crowded mayoral race with 66.14% of the vote. He became the second consecutive Democratic mayor after Bill de Blasio.
A Historic Milestone
Adams made history as the second Black mayor of New York City, following David Dinkins who served from 1990 to 1993. His victory reflected the changing demographics of the city and the growing political power of the Black community.
A Fiscal Crisis
In July 2022, Mayor Adams raised concerns about the city's financial situation, comparing it to his own childhood in a financially struggling household. He called for fiscal restraint and emphasized the city's need to navigate a potential economic downturn.
Childhood and Education
Adams was born in Brooklyn, the fourth of six children. He grew up in Queens and graduated from the New York City Police Academy in 1984. His early life experiences shaped his commitment to public service and his focus on improving the lives of underprivileged communities.
