Biography of Erik Bosgraaf

Erik Bosgraaf is a Dutch recorder player and laureate of national music competitions. He is considered one of the most talented and versatile performers of the new generation on the recorder. In his vibrant past, Bosgraaf was a member of a rock band and also played the oboe.

Early Life and Education

Erik Bosgraaf was born in the Netherlands in 1980. He was a former student of Walter van Hauwe and Paul Leenhouts at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Bosgraaf obtained a master's degree in musicology, specializing in Dutch song collections of the 18th century, from Utrecht University.

Awards and Performances

In 2009, Bosgraaf was awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and in 2008, he participated in the Earlymusic festival. In 2007, Dutch recorder player Frans Brüggen invited Bosgraaf to perform Bach's cantata "Actus Tragicus" in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam's renowned concert hall with excellent acoustics.

In his current repertoire, Erik Bosgraaf includes a solo performance with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden and with the Dutch Radio Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thierry Fischer.

Recordings and Ensembles

Bosgraaf's debut album, a triple release featuring the music of Dutch composer Jacob van Eyck, reached the top spot on the Dutch classical music charts in celebration of the composer's 350th death anniversary. His other recordings include works by Telemann, Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi.

In 2006, Erik Bosgraaf, together with classical guitarist Izhar Elias and harpsichordist Alessandro Pianu, formed the ensemble "Cordevento," specializing in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. In 2004, he organized the First European Festival of the Recorder, which took place in the vicinity of Amsterdam.

Musical Style and Impact

Erik Bosgraaf believes that good music transcends style, and he feels equally at home playing both contemporary and ancient music. He has delighted audiences with several new compositions and has showcased the progress of the recorder in his concerts.
