Yermolai Grigoryevich Kоберидзе
Early Life and Military CareerYermolai Kоберидзе was born on April 15, 1904, in the village of Tskhmori, Georgia. He came from a peasant family and received a secondary education. In 1922, he joined the Soviet Army and later graduated from the Higher Officers' Improvement Course (КУКС) in 1939.
World War II
Kоберидзе actively participated in World War II from June 1941. He particularly distinguished himself in the battles for the Vistula River in July 1944. On July 27, he personally led his division's advance guard to the eastern bank of the Vistula near Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, and organized its crossing.
Despite heavy enemy fire, the troops, inspired by Kобеriдзе, crossed the river and established a bridgehead. The entire division followed in the ensuing days, consolidating and expanding their position on the western bank.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his skillful command and personal heroism during the Vistula battles, Yermolai Kоберидзе was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on April 6, 1945. He also received numerous other awards during his career.
Post-War Career
After the war, Kоберидзе graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1948. He retired in 1961 and settled in Tbilisi, where he taught at a university.
Legacy
Yermolai Kоберидзе passed away on July 12, 1974. He is remembered as a courageous and skilled commander who played a vital role in the Soviet victory during World War II.
