Early Life and Education
Alexander Marschik, an Austrian diplomat, was born in Vienna in 1952. He pursued a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Vienna (1967-1971), a postgraduate degree in International Law from the University of Moscow (1972-1973), and a Master's degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University (1973-1974).
Diplomatic Service
1975-1987: Early CareerMarschik began his diplomatic career with the Austrian Foreign Ministry in 1975. He held various positions within the ministry, including at the Austrian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1978-1980).
1980-1991: Soviet Union and Europe
Marschik served as Counselor and Press Attaché at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow from 1980 to 1985. Subsequently, he held leadership roles in the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (1986-1987) and at the Creditanstalt-Bankverein in Moscow (1987-1989).
1991-2007: Business and Ministry Leadership
Marschik transitioned to the private sector, working as International Business Director for Maculan Group (1991-1994). He returned to the Foreign Ministry in 1994, heading the Asset Management Department (1994-1997) and the EU Enlargement and External Trade Department (1997-2003). He served as Director-General for Economic Affairs and European Integration (2003-2007).
2007-2012: Ambassador to China
Marschik was appointed Austrian Ambassador to China, Mongolia, and North Korea in 2007.
Ambassador to the United Nations
Since 2012, Marschik has been the Austrian Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He has also served as Special Representative of the OSCE's Chairperson-in-Office for the Trilateral Contact Group on the Ukrainian conflict since 2015.
Personal Life
Marschik is married with four children. He is fluent in English, Russian, French, and Italian.
