Early Life and Military Education

Ernest-Louis-Octave Courtot de Cisse was born into a Burgundian family in Paris, France. He received a renowned military education at the École Militaire Préparatoire de La Flèche and the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr.

Military Career

Cisse embarked on his military career as a lieutenant in 1832. He rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1839 and a lieutenant colonel in 1850 while serving in Algeria. During the Crimean War, he earned the rank of brigadier general for his valor at the Battle of Inkerman in 1854. In 1863, he was promoted to general of division.

Franco-Prussian War and Repression

Cisse played a significant role in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Subsequently, he actively participated in the suppression of the Paris Commune, targeting internal enemies of the state.

Ministerial Appointments

Cisse held the portfolio of Minister of War on several occasions. Notably, he became Prime Minister of France from May 22, 1874, to March 10, 1875.

Senate and Later Years

In 1875, Cisse was elected a lifetime senator. Retiring from public life, he died in Paris on June 15, 1882.
