Tassos Papadopoulos: From Activist to President
Birth and EducationTassos Papadopoulos was born on January 7, 1934, in Nicosia, Cyprus. He pursued a legal education in the United Kingdom, shaping his future path in politics and law.
Anti-Colonial Struggle and Independence
As a young man, Papadopoulos actively participated in the Cypriot resistance against British colonial rule. He joined the Greek Cypriot delegation that drafted the constitution of the Republic of Cyprus upon its independence in 1960.
Ministerial Career
After Cyprus gained independence, Papadopoulos swiftly rose through the ranks of its political elite, serving in various ministerial positions for the next 12 years. He led the portfolios of Interior, Finance, Labor and Social Insurance, Health, and Agriculture.
Parliamentary and Presidential Ambitions
In 1970, Papadopoulos became a member of parliament for the United Democratic Party, led by Glafcos Clerides. He aspired to the presidency and faced Clerides as his main rival in the 2003 presidential election.
Presidential Victory
To the surprise of many, Papadopoulos emerged victorious in the first round of the presidential election, becoming President of the Republic of Cyprus on February 16, 2003. His success was attributed to Clerides' advanced age.
Personal Life
Beyond his political endeavors, Papadopoulos is a prominent advocate, leading a successful law firm. He remains an ardent supporter of Greek culture, enjoying theater and participating in amateur performances during his student days. He is married and has four children.
