Hipólito Mejía, Dominican Republic's New President
Election VictoryHipólito Mejía, the 59-year-old candidate for the opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party, was declared the official winner of the Dominican Republic's presidential election. Despite falling short of the 50 percent plus one vote threshold with only 49.9 percent of the votes, Mejía's victory was secured when other candidates withdrew from the race.
