Early Life and Education
Karen Bass was born in Los Angeles, California, to Wilhelmina and DeWitt Talmadge Bass. She spent her childhood in the neighborhoods of Venice and Fairfax, attending Hamilton High School. From 1971 to 1973, she studied Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. In 1990, she graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management.
Career in Health Care
Prior to her political career, Bass worked as a physician assistant and an instructor at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.
California State Legislature
Bass's entry into politics began in 2004 when she was elected to the California State Assembly from the 47th District. In 2008, she made history by becoming the first African American woman to serve as Speaker of the California State Assembly.
United States House of Representatives
On November 2, 2010, Bass was elected to the United States House of Representatives from California's 33rd Congressional District. In 2013, her district was renumbered as the 37th Congressional District. In the 2018 midterm elections, she defeated Republican challenger Ron Bassilian by a landslide margin of 89%.
