Ernst Wetter: A Swiss Politician and President

Early Life and Education

Ernst Wetter was born in Switzerland and pursued his education at the University of Zurich, where he studied economics from 1911 to 1914. Upon receiving his doctorate, he commenced teaching at the cantonal commercial school.

Political Career

Wetter's political journey began with his election to the Cantonal Council of Zurich from 1926 to 1934. In 1929, he was elected to the National Council of Switzerland.

Federal Councillor

In December 1938, Wetter was chosen as a member of the Federal Council, earning 117 votes to the 98 received by the Social Democrat Emil Klöti. He succeeded Albert Meyer in this role.

Legacy as Federal Councillor

Wetter's tenure on the Federal Council was marked by his efforts to gradually introduce socially balanced taxes. These taxes helped finance increased military expenditure and mitigate inflation. They subsequently became a cornerstone of Switzerland's welfare system.
