Life and Career of Eva K. Bowring

Early Life and Marriage

Eva K. Bowring was born in 1892. In 1928, she married Arthur Bowring, a rancher from Cherry County, Nebraska. They lived together at the Bowring Ranch for 16 years until Arthur's passing in 1944.

Political Involvement

Despite her husband's political involvement within the Republican Party, Eva remained active in politics after his death. In 1954, Governor Robert B. Crosby appointed her to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy left by the passing of Dwight Griswold.

U.S. Senator

Bowring became the first woman to represent Nebraska in the Senate. Her tenure lasted from April 16 to November 7, 1954, during a tumultuous period when six senators held the office within a six-year timeframe.

Return to the Ranch

Following her Senate service, Bowring returned to the Bowring Ranch. She also worked part-time for the U.S. Department of Justice's Board of Parole from 1956 to 1964.

Legacy

Bowring passed away in 1985, leaving behind a legacy of service and a passion for her husband's memory. She bequeathed the 132-acre Bowring Ranch to the state of Nebraska, which transformed it into the Bowring Ranch State Historical Park. The ranch continues to operate as a working cattle ranch, preserving the history and legacy of the Bowrings for future generations.
