John Beaman: A Dedicated Politician and Islander
Early Life and EducationBorn to Kathleen and Thomas Beaman in Castleford, John Beaman attended The King's School in Pontefract and later pursued a degree at the University of Bradford. Upon graduating, he moved to Madeley, Staffordshire, where he qualified as a mathematics teacher.
Teaching Career
From 1976 to 2005, Beaman dedicated himself to education. He taught in mainstream schools before transitioning to a specialized school for troubled teenagers.
Political Journey
In December 2008, Beaman's political career commenced when he was elected as one of five members to the States of Alderney. In a historic event, Beaman and Don Auckland received an equal number of votes (294), necessitating a random draw by the Electoral Commission Chair. Beaman emerged victorious, while Auckland's candidacy was not successful.
Tourism Spokesperson
On February 18, 2009, Beaman was appointed as Tourism Spokesperson. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the island in attracting tourists and pledged to collaborate with local communities to enhance Alderney's tourism industry.
Controversial Policies
Beaman's tenure has been marked by his opposition to increasing Assembly members' salaries and the creation of a housing association.
Personal Life
In 1976, John Beaman married Ann Webster, a school teacher. Their son, Robert, is their pride and joy. Today, Beaman and his wife volunteer as tour guides at the Alderney Lighthouse. Beaman remains an avid rugby league fan, supporting the Castleford Tigers.
Literary Contributions
Beaman has authored a guidebook titled "Eight Walks on Alderney," which has been translated into French, German, Polish, and Russian.
