Russian Botanist

Education and Career

In 1917, the Russian botanist graduated from the Moscow University. From 1920, he worked in Tashkent, contributing to the establishment of the Turkestan University. In 1932, he became a professor at the university, heading the Department of Higher Plants and Plant Geography. From 1943 to 1948, he served as the director of the Institute of Botany and Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR. From 1950 to 1952, he became the director of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR.

Academic Accomplishments

In 1947, he was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR. His research focused on the flora and vegetation of Central Asia. He described over 100 new plant species and 8 new genera belonging to the Apiaceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Polygonaceae families, among others. He also developed a geobotanical map of Central Asia and conducted its regionalization.

Contributions to Arid Land Development

The botanist also investigated agricultural development in arid regions. His efforts led to the establishment of a desert research station in Uzbekistan. He published numerous scientific works on the topic, including the two-volume monograph "The Vegetation of Central Asia and Southern Kazakhstan" in 1963.

Recognition and Honors

The botanist was twice awarded the V. L. Komarov Prize (in 1947 and 1963) for his significant contributions to botany. He received the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals for his achievements.
